| Welcome by John McDonnell MP |

|
| I am extremely proud to be associated with the development of Guru
Nanak Sikh Secondary School in my constituency. Our area comprises
a multi-ethnic and multi-faith community in which we are seeking
to raise our children in a tradition of mutual respect for all of
our |
 |
different cultures, faiths and traditions. This
means that our local education service must reflect the cultural
and religious composition of our community and also respond to the wishes of local
parents on the nature of the education they wish to provide to
their children.
Guru Nanak College was founded in 1993 to meet these challenges.
It succeeded as a direct result of the dedication and hard work
of Baba Ji, Mr Sandhu (Headteacher) all the staff, its Governors,
parents and of course its students.
Prior to my election in 1997 I gave my commitment to the parents
that I would do all I could to assist the College in gaining the
recognition and financial support from the Government which it deserved.
I am so pleased that the Government recognised the excellent service
the College provided to our community and subsequently backed this
commitment with resources so that the change of status to voluntary
aided school was achieved in September 1999.
We are now set fair for an exciting future at the School. Rest
assured that I will continue to work hard to support the School
and enable it to go from strength to strength.
