Curriculum Information
ICT AT KEY STAGE 3
Information and communication technology is taught as a subject for 90 minutes each week as well as being used across the curriculum. Students are taught in groups of 20 and have individual access to a computer. Every student has their own unique Username and Password to access the school-wide network and the Internet. The system is filtered where possible to ensure that students are not exposed to inappropriate material.
In Years 7 and 8 we develop students' skills in the major ICT applications - word processing, desktop publishing, databases, graphics, spreadsheets, web design and control technology. We also teach students to use the Internet effectively as a research tool. The main aim is to build upon the knowledge and skills students bring from Key Stage 2 to enable them to use ICT effectively throughout the curriculum.
In Year 9 the students are currently working on the OCR National Level 2 course in ICT. This course is the equivalent of passing 4 GCSE examinations and they will complete al the required Units by the end of Year 11.
Resources
The school has recently installed a school-wide network which includes 3 computer rooms with 22 computers, 2 computer rooms with 30 computers and 10 computers in the Library, 15 in Music, 20 in Technology and 5 in Art as well as at least one computer in every classroom.
All students will have access to the use of their Hillingdongrid email accounts which will allow them to easily transfer work between home and school.
ICT AT KEY STAGE 4
Information and Communication Technology is compulsory for all students
Examination Board
Students will follow the OCR National Certificate Level 2 course. Students are awarded a Distinction (grade A), Merit (grade B) or Pass (grade C) for each unit. Completion of all 6 units is equivalent to FOUR GCSEs at grades A* to C.
Course content
The course consists of 6 units:
Unit 1 has a broad focus providing each student with a general understanding of Information and Communication Technology. The other 5 units introduce a more specialised vocational focus and provide opportunities for the student to broaden his/her skills and knowledge gained from unit 1.
Assessment
Each module is internally assessed through portfolios of work. The examination board then moderate the work, awarding the final grade.
Further study
Completion of this course will prepare students well for further study at Advanced Level.
