Our aim is to develop assessment procedures that help students make more progress.

We believe that Assessment for Learning is a process of seeking and interpreting evidence so that it can be used by learners and their eachers to decide where the learners are in their learning and how teachers can support and challenge students to make further progress.

Assessment:

  • Is part of effective planning
  • Focuses on how students learn
  • Is central to classroom practice
  • Is a key professional skill
  • Is sensitive and constructive
  • Fosters motivation
  • Promotes understanding of goals and criteria
  • Helps learners know how to improve
  • Develops the capacity for self-assessment
  • Recognises all educational achievement

At Guru Nanak Sikh School subject teachers employ formal and informal assessment methods to monitor students' progress.

Once a term, formal assessment and effort grades are entered onto the school IT system and into students' homework diaries for each subject. These are monitored by Heads of Departments and Pastoral teams to ensure each child is fulfilling their potential.

These grades form the basis of the termly mentoring interviews.Early during the autumn term all students are given a Target Minimum Level

(TML) in Key Stage 3 and Target Minimum Grades (TMG) in Key Stages 4 and 5. Students then work towards achieving their TMG/TML throughout the Key Stage.

On entry to the school in Year 7, students sit a 'CATs' test. The scores are used in conjunction with Key Stage 2 National Curriculum results to inform staff of their differing abilities.

At the end of Key Stage 3 all students sit National Curriculum SATs in English, Mathematics and Science and teacher assessment levels are given for Foundation subjects. At the end of Key Stage 4 students sit GCSEs and GNVQ examinations. Throughout Key Stage 5 students sit AS, A2 and AVCE exams.

We work closely with the LEA statistics department and have consulted with other schools to continually review and improve our assessment procedures.
