Profile
The library at Guru Nanak Sikh V.A. School was opened in July 2003 by John McDonnell MP. Since then much progress has been made in expanding the resources and facilities in the library to serve the needs of all students and staff.
The Library and Learning Resource Centre aims to provide a range of fiction and non-fiction to encourage wide reading and support the development of literacy. To motivate readers and coach them to make progress on a specific target, the Library runs reading clubs every morning on Wednesday and Friday. The club works by identifying a key reading target for each pupil and then giving individual coaching by a sixth-former, followed by the school organiser who assesses pupil progress against the target, rewards success and possibly sets a further challenge and encourages them to participate in yearly events such as the Hillingdon and the Carnegie Yearly Book Awards.
The Library and Learning Resource Centre aims to provide access to a range of information through books, Audio, Video, CD-ROMs, Library software, an online encyclopaedia and the Internet. To raise funds for the School Library, the library staff organised two events at the Beck Theatre, Hayes:
• 9th July, 2005 Multicultural Evening
• 28th October, 2007 Global Challenges
These were an outstanding success and a true reflection of the commitment of parents, students, staff and the community and each event has raised £5000 for the school's Library.
