Admissions Criteria 2010:

Subject to available places, governors will admit 60 pupils to the Reception year matched against the criteria below:

  1. Children in public care (Looked After Children)
  2. Children living with parents/legal guardians/carers, who demonstrate a commitment to the Sikh faith. Evidence of this will be required through the completion of a self-evaluation religious questionnaire (RQ) and a statement from the Priest of your Gurdwara. Children living with parents/legal guardians/carers at least one of whom attends worship monthly in the tradition of any faith other than Sikh. The frequency of the worship must be certified by the appropriate authorities on the Other Faiths form. This certification will be used to establish priority within this criterion. This will be by way of the self evaluation form Other Faiths Form, included in the (RQ). The places will be allocated to the highest scored applicants.
  3. Any surplus places not filled by any of the above criteria will be allocated to those children whose parents/legal guardians/carers have applied to the school and live nearest the school (as measured from the main entrance of the Primary school office to the address point as set by the Ordinance Survey for the home address.)

Within each category, priority will be given to children in the following order:

a)        Children with brothers or sisters in the school who were admitted prior to Year 6. They should have a brother or sister attending the school at the time of the admission.

b)        Distance from home to school is measured from the main entrance of the Primary school office to the address point as set by the Ordinance Survey for the home address.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE 2010

To give an example:

We have the majority of applications falling under criteria 2, ‘children living with parents/legal guardians/carers who demonstrate commitment to the Sikh faith.’ Marks are awarded for each answer and the information is sent to the  Admissions Panel in categories awarded “Outstanding”, “Good” and “Insufficient evidence” from the Nanaksar Thath Isher Darbar Trust.  They would not share any other information with the schools Admissions Panel. Those that are ‘outstanding’ and ‘good’ would be considered under criteria 2, and those with “Insufficient Evidence” will be considered under criteria 4.

Additional Guidance for Criteria 2. Commitment to the Sikh Faith

Religious Questionnaire awarded Outstanding (110 marks and above)

School places are allocated by rank order of the Religious Questionnaire with the ‘outstanding’ group considered first. The sibling ruling would be applied to the top ranked ‘outstanding’ and all those children may be admitted.

Then the distance ruling would be applied to the ‘outstanding’ and those living nearest the school may be given places.

If there are still places remaining after this then the next batch of Religious Questionnaires ‘good’ are scrutinised.

Religious Questionnaire awarded Good (109 - 80 marks)

The ‘good’ questionnaires are put into rank order. The sibling ruling would be applied first and all those children may be admitted.

Then the distance ruling would be applied and those living nearest the school may be given places.

Religious Questionnaire awarded Insufficient Evidence  (79 marks and below)

These applications would be put to one side and later considered under criteria 4 (distance) if there were still places remaining.

Total Marks for the Religious Questionnaire: 140

Other Faith Applicants

After the Sikh faith applications have been considered and allocated under Criteria 2, other Faiths are then considered under Criteria 3.

Total Marks for the Other Faith Religious Questionnaire: 110

Please note that for Parents/carers/legal guardians who do not submit a Religious Questionnaire in respect of their child’s place, the application will only be considered under criteria 4, Distance.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION  FOR ADMISSIONS

PLEASE NOTE ADMISSION TO THE NURSERY DOES NOT GUARANTEE A PLACE IN THE MAIN PRIMARY SCHOOL. ADMITTANCE TO THE MAIN PRIMARY SCHOOL IS THROUGH THE LOCAL AUTHORITY.

Admission of Pupils to the Nursery

When your child is over two years of age, and you require a Nursery place at Guru Nanak Sikh Nursery, collect an Admission Form and Religious Questionnaire from the school office. The Admission Form is returnable to the school office and the Religious Questionnaire to the Nanaksar That Isher Darbar, 1 Mander Street, Wolverhampton, WV3 0JU.

In Year admission ( from September 2010)

Applications for In-Year admission are made in the same way as those made during the normal admissions round.  Parents are required to complete a Common Application Form (CAF) from their Home Local Authority and in the case of the above two schools, will be required to complete a Religious Questionnaire so that the Governing Body may consider the application fully.

If a place is available and there is no waiting list then the Local Authority will communicate the Governors offer of a place to the parent.  If there are no places available this will be conveyed to the Local Authority who will write to the parent with this information.  You may ask us for the reasons why a place cannot be offered and you will be informed of your right of Appeal.  You will be offered the opportunity of being placed on a waiting list.  The waiting list will be maintained by the Governing Body in the order of the oversubscription criteria and not in the order in which the applications are received.  Every year in June, we will write to every parent with a child on the waiting list requesting confirmation that the child’s name should remain on the waiting list.  When a place becomes available the school will advise the Local Authority of the child who is top of the list so that the Home Local Authority can inform the parent that an offer is being made on behalf of the Governing Body.

Twins

If a situation arises whereby only one place is available and twins have identical entitlement to that place then the names of the twins will be written on separate piece of paper and one of them randomly drawn to allocate a place. This will result in one twin gaining a place and the other having to wait until a subsequent place becomes available. This system would operate for triplets or other multiple births.

SEN (Special Education Needs)

Any child with a statement of Special Education Need, that names Guru Nanak Sikh Primary VA School, on the statement, is admitted to the school. The Inclusion Manager of the school will then look at the child’s statemented needs to see if the school can accommodate the child’s needs.

Admission of Pupils with Disabilities

We believe that children with SEN (Special Education Needs) should be educated in a classroom setting and be fully integrated with their peers whenever possible. All children with SEN have full access to the National Curriculum, modified according to their needs.

Whenever possible, we try to provide full social integration for all our children with SEN, during playtimes, Lunch times, Educational visits and after school activities.

The school building and grounds are fully accessible to the disabled.

School Access

A major government priority is to make school buildings more accessible to people

with disabilities. Our building is new and therefore easy for pupils, staff, parents/carers to access. We have 2 disabled toilets one on the ground floor and one on the first floor. We have level access to the building and ramps to make it easier to enter and leave the building.

We have a lift to allow pupils in wheelchairs to gain access to the upper floor of the schools.
